An entrepreneur who has figured it out

I had the pleasure of meeting the principal of Petit Fours the yesterday. What a great concept these people have and I really hope they succeed.

I stopped in the store to wait for my daughter to be dropped off at her local high school (she is in DISD's Arts Magnet Ballet Program), and started a conversation with Carolyn Key. What a great concept, business plan and expectations. Petit Fours is a purveyor of super desserts for people who are entertaining.

So why am I writing about this here. Well here is the most important part. ... (drum roll) she could articulate her plan in under 90 seconds, clearly, concisely and with great enthusiasm. She truly was the walking talking and breathing commercial for herself and the business she is trying to grow. She understood the product, the concept, and what she was selling.

Oh, to me she was not selling cakes at that point,(I had already finished my transaction) she was selling herself and her idea of just what she wanted to do and how she wanted to grow the business.

I think we all need to take a lesson from her. This lady has cracked the code about what she wanted to do, why she wanted to it, and her ability to transition from what she was doing to doing this whole new thing. Wow.

This is not meant to be a commercial for her... but stop in get a cup of coffee or something and ask her why she is in this business. I think you will get a lesson on how all of us should be approaching our job search. See my blog for her business card

Get Ready for Fish!

It was interesting exercise Lisa Miller puts us through today. Breaking us up based on personality traits and helping us determine what kinds of jobs we would happier albeit more successful in.

I learned a few things about myself and many of those around me gained particular knowledge about themselves. Dare I say many in the group fell in to the same category. No matter what color grouping you fell in to Gold, Green, Orange or Blue, you and your tablemates worked together to determine your characteristics and opportunities for finding the right kinds of career.

While Dennis could not make it today, Don Brock stepped in to discuss informational interviewing and Lisa covered web strategies.

Both great presentations from what I could hear (I could only be in one place at a time).

Lisa has the Fish thing coming up on August 25th. Give her an RSVP so she can plan for the number attending.

Hey Lisa, Sign me up for that one. I want to be there!!!!!

They really do look Indeed

Not to be too solicitous I am going to point you to my personal job-search blog to let you know companies are really looking at what we say. I started this blog about a week ago and the other day I wrote about being on Indeed.

Strangely enough, on of their marketing people sent me an email trying to help me improve my results. (I was not even complaining, I thought I was being complimentary in what I wrote.) The net result is companies are looking at what you write, blogging does work.

Another Great Day at Career Connection

With permission of Lisa, I get to log a few entries for Career Connection.

Today was a great day at the general meeting of Career Connection. We had some wonderful presentations especially the main part today done by Jim Curry (Merrill Lynch) and Charlie Zinger (Concentra). The did a part that included many of the gaffes and mis-steps done by some 15 different callers to Charlied over the last few months(?).

While it was humorous, it really drove home some great lessons. Charlie and Jim gave out some great tips and the post presentation discussion was lively. One major lesson learned was despite the gaffes and mis-steps, these people picked up that 400 lb telephone handset and made the calls. I guess that is enough said.
